If you’re thinking of joining us, these should answer a few questions…

How big is the choir?

Currently there are just over 60 members. There is no limit to numbers we can take.

Where do we meet?

Every Wednesday at Four Oaks Primary School, from 4-5.30pm. A break is built into this time and we encourage members to bring a drink and snack.

Is there an audition?

Yes – at the beginning of September. You will be asked to choose a song that you know and we’ll ask you to sing a few scales to determine your highest and lowest note.  This is very ‘low key’ and non-threatening. You don’t have to worry about being a soloist – just the ability to sing in tune. We sometimes hold auditions though the year if there is a demand.

Who can audition for the choir?

Anyone in years 5-8  from in and around the Four Oaks/Sutton Area.

If I don’t get in can I try again next year?

Of course – but we try to be as accommodating as possible.

Do I need to have grades or have had singing lessons?

No – but lots of enthusiasm and commitment, of course!

What standard do you have to be and do you have to be able to read music?

You need to be able to sing in tune and to hold your part.  If you have a good ear this will be enough. However you do not need to have the best voice in the world! Some ability to read music is helpful, but by no means essential.

Will I be expected to attend every rehearsal?

Yes, if possible. Good attendance is expected from the whole choir – we learn many pieces in parts and missing too many rehearsals would be a big problem.  We work as a team.

What if I cannot attend a rehearsal?

Please let us know in writing if there is a prior engagement – or let the school office know if you happen to be ill on the actual day. Our number is 0121 675 2685 and this will get you though to our office.

How will I find out about performances?

The dates of all our events are published on the website and via letters to all choir members at regular intervals.

How often to we perform?

That depends on the time of year, but we usually do an average of 2-3 performances each term, very often with a live band or orchestra. We also make an annual CD, and take part in regular competitions and festivals. Recent examples include BBC Choir Of The Year and Music For Youth. We work to achieve the best quality performances; if only good is what you’re after, this is not the choir for you!

Where do we perform?

Our performance venues have included Sutton Town Hall, Lichfield Cathedral, Warwick Arts Centre, Adrian Boult Hall, Tamworth Assembly Rooms and the Lichfield Garrick Theatre – as well as school halls. We aim to give the choir as many varied performing opportunities as possible, in the local and not so local area.

What do we sing?

A really wide range of music - we take singing seriously and learn range of repertoire, ranging from classical styles to popular classics.  Click on our current song list to find out more. We usually sing in at least two part harmony.
